Evaluation Of My Final Product

7 Questions

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For my media product, I created my own music magazine. It does follow the code and conventions of a real, professional, published music magazine. I researched different types of music magazines and went to my local supermarket and purchased a couple of music magazines that relate to the genre of music I used, which was pop, to help give me an idea of what a professional music magazine consists of. My music magazine follows the codes & conventions because it includes a 'Puff' which gives the reader information about that specific magazine like the date it was published, how much the magazine will cost etc. While I was researching music magazines on the internet, I come across a music magazine that I found very attractive so I decided to use it as a base for my music magazine. I then edited it and took bits out and developed it to make it my own work. I challenged the codes and conventions by moving the masthead down the left side of the front cover instead of having it across the top of the front cover.

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I didn't want my music magazine 'The Best Of Liverpool Sounds' to only appeal to one social group or one race. I wanted it to appeal to all young people of both races. I wanted the main star of my magazine "Kaylen" to be set out as someone like Ed Sheeran or Zayn Malik (when he was still a part of One Direction). These stars are seen as 'the boy next door' which means they are who they are and they haven't been pampered up and they wear and sing what they want. But, he may also become a pretty boy in 2 or 3 years time, if he is still around, like Zayn did. Zayn was raised in a working-class family so he wasn't wealthy but he wasn't poor whereas, Ed Sheeran's musical talents were recognised at a very young when he was accepted into the 'National Youth Theatre' when he was a teenager so he has always been doing well for himself. I want my music magazine star to be set out more like Ed Sheeran with a fortunate background and a very successful music career. However, I want him to have aspects of Justin Bieber as well because my target audience is 16-20 and Bieber is very popular with both genders of that age group.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think that the best media institution that should distribute my magazine 'The Best Of Liverpool Sounds' is 'Billboard'. I chose this distributor because it is very famous all over the world and it is one of the best distributors for pop magazines in the world. It has a very large target audience because anyone of any age can buy their magazines which means that they have a huge amount of customers. Using 'Billboard' will help my magazine gain a lot of publicity which means that any other magazines that I produce will automatically have a large amount of customers. Since this institution has such a large target audience this means that my target audience of ages 16-20 will definitely be covered. Whilst I was doing my research for pop magazines I also investigated the articles, competitions and images etc. to see what my target audience's interests are.so that I can include them in my magazine to try and attract more customers. My goals for my magazine is to start it out small then gradually try and make it bigger and hopefully get it at the top with Billboard and MTV.

4) Who would be the audience for your media product?

I want my target audience to be from the age of around 16 up to around 20 year olds. This is because this age range are the most likely ages to buy more magazines and keep up to date on them whereas a 70 year old woman wouldn't be bothered about fashion tips or new pop stars. I will use pathos for the advertisement of my music magazine which helps creates different emotions and makes the reader think and feel how they want them to. It will also make them think about different scenarios that could happen and make them think about what it would be like if that happened in their life. I also chose this age group because this is the age range that spends a lot of their time on social media so they will talk about magazines a lot and spread the word about my magazine. I will need to understand the uses and gratifications theory if I want to use this age range as my target audience. My music magazine will have to show why people look for specific media to satisfy their needs. The audience wants to be informed and educated about what is currently happening on social media and what is the new big news with pop stars today. This will be useful because things will start to link to my music magazine which will attract more customers who will want to buy my magazine.

5) How did you attract/address your audience?

To attract my audience I made sure that the model I used for my main image is making eye contact with the camera so it makes it look as though where ever the reader moves it still looks like they are making eye contact with them. This will make the reader feel as though the magazine is talking directly to the reader. I used a model who looks quite young and innocent which fits the stereotype of a pop music magazine but they also have a mischievous look about them so it is hard to predict what they are going to do. The main way that I am going to attract/address my audience is by giving them simple entertainment which they don't realise but they need it, this is called the 'uses and gratifications theory'.

6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I used a number of different technologies to create my music magazine such as, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Powerpoint and the internet. When I first started this project I didn't have much experience with Photoshop and InDesign but as I got further through the course I developed my skills in these technologies and I am now able to use them to an advanced level.

7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When I look back on the start of my media course and compare it to how far I have progressed through it I can tell that I have become much more confident at using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Indesign.

Deadline for all work was last Friday - please pop all work up before Tuesday.
Please see me on Tuesday in lesson.
Q.1 needs to be developed as it is far too thin and you must be able to discuss your magazin efar more than this.
